Exercise 4 – Spider Diagrams

I have been asked to create a spider diagram for each of the following words:

Seaside – Childhood – Angry – Festival

I had to also test the completed spider diagrams with another person – using a different colour for each person I spoke to, ticking any words that were common and including any additional words they suggested.

Common words ticked in green

Additional words in blue

I tested the spider diagrams on my boyfriend (age 39) and daughter (age 11) and marked them on the diagrams above.

The word that was most difficult to work with was ANGER. This is because it is already something that you would associate with the main theme and is an emotion rather than an object, place or theme. Therefore this limits the number of options available to break it down further.

The strategies that suited me best to come up with words, were to use repeated titles as starting points. For example, sights or sounds are things that will generally relate to most things, but will help to trigger ideas and linked words.
